Song Circus: Graatarslagjet
10.05.2022 / 19:30 – 21:30
With Stine Janvin
Stine Janvin (fellow 2020) will be back in Berlin for a concert with the ensemble, Song Circus. It is one of Norway´s leading contemporary music ensembles, a critically acclaimed Norwegian chamber ensemble of professional and improvising singers, specialized in contemporary music. The chamber ensemble is based in Stavanger, under the artistic direction of Liv Runesdatter. Song Circus works with experimental music, sound art and audiovisual performance, and has cultivated an unusual and fascinating sound vocabulary.
Graatarslagjet, a themed concert for which Song Circus have commissioned new works from Norwegian composers Therese Birkelund Ulvo, Nils Henrik Asheim, Tyler Futrell and Ole-Henrik Moe is inspired by the legendary folk song of the same name, from the region.
“Graatarslagjet”, the fiddle tune on which the project is based, is from Bjerkreim, a small place in Western Norway. The story says that a wedding procession was on their way from church across the ice on a deep fjord (Ørdalsvatnet) when the ice burst and the whole trail went down and drowned. Alone in the water surface floated the fiddle, and all was quiet except for the fiddle who was playing the mournful Graatarslagjet melody.
The composers have written new works loosely inspired by this story and the original fiddle tune, and the concert includes the incomparable sound of the traditional Norwegian Hardanger fiddle played by Britt Pernille Frøholm. In addition, the visual artist Tove Kommedal has created a visual installation for the concert representing death as a vital force.
