Foxes and Hedgehogs: An Evening for Dubravka Ugrešić

In March 2023, the Croatian writer and essayist Dubravka Ugrešić died at the age of 73 in her chosen home of Amsterdam. Ugrešić, a fellow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 1994, was the number one exiled role-model for generations of post-Yugoslav women writers to come. In her work the ethical was never separated from the aesthetic and she remained faithful to the high standards she set for herself early on, both as an author and a citizen. Her work is both recognizable and versatile, modern and informed, and her intelligent sense of humor and attention for detail are unsurpassed in contemporary Yugoslav literature. The original “Witch” of the Balkan letters, she famously wrote that she bought her own broom with her own money and flies alone. In that way she had admitted to a sin that could never be forgiven in a post-war, nationalist and patriarchal system that is modern Croatia: being a woman who needs neither a man, nor a nation, to leave her mark on this world.

The writer and current fellow Lana Bastašić invites friends and readers of Dubravka Ugrešić to gather around her texts and discuss them.

Burak Çevik: Forms of Forgetting

A couple who broke up 14 years ago find that they can’t remember how they broke up when they meet again years later. Over time, memories and places have been mixed. Everything overlaps in memory. Forms of Forgetting is an exploration of how history is layered and rewritten over a couple. The film turns into a recall exercise on the axis of stories, dreams and memories that emerged as a result of the interviews with the couple. Some memories are remembered with the images taken, and some images are taken again thanks to the memories.

Turkish filmmaker Burak Çevik, film fellow 2022, will present his latest feature film Forms of Forgetting which he completed during his stay in Berlin and premiered at Berlinale Forum in February 2023.
