SPACE AND TIME
02.11.2023 / 19:30 – 20:30
With Lily Scherlis
In Summer 2023, Arts-and-Media Fellow Lily Scherlis conducted in-depth interviews with nearly twenty fellows and curators of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in the Visual Arts who were involved with the program between 1978 and 2023. The interviews raised a series of questions: what is an artist, geopolitically? Economically?
On the basis of these interviews, Scherlis presents the new, experimental lecture performance Space and Time. Space and time are hard to find. Established artists have came to Berlin as fellows of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program looking for these scarce resources for decades. In return for the gift of space and time – a sprawling apartment, a studio, a year of living costs – artists serve as vehicles for diplomacy, defenses against brain drain, magnets for prestige, and valued observers of social change. With space and time on offer, the DAAD pulls artists’ lives in one direction where they might have gone another. What does a year of autonomy mean in a world of scarcity? And, if the distribution of space and time in this economy is unequal, who deserves this resource?
