Toledo
Born in Posadas (Argentina) in 1964, lives in New York. Co-founded the experimental multi-media group Indiklextomink. Worked as a guitarist and composer in Santa Fé (Argentina), where he studied music at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (composition with Dante Grela; research project on Stravinsky). Moved to the USA in 1992. Studied composition at Syracuse University (with Christopher Hopkins) and at Columbia University (with Tristan Murail, Fred Lerdahl and Jonathan Kramer); composition courses with Helmut Lachenmann, Julio Estrada and others. Teacher (lectures, courses, workshops) at Stanford University, UNAM (Mexico City), New York University, Columbia University and other institutions.
Toledo organized concerts and panels at the Goethe Institute in New York for the intercultural project Global Interplay (2005–06). He is currently working on a book mapping sound techniques, primarily those involving noise, in the music of the 20th century (Mapa del ruido en la música del siglo XX).
His list of works includes the radiophonic opera De qué modo en lo anónimo (2002), based on a text by Juan José Saer, for the Spanish broadcaster Radio Clásica; the ensemble piece Para el encuentro en los abismos (2003) for 24 musicians commissioned by the Ensemble Intercontemporain; and the opera La selva interior (The Jungle Within), premiered at Centro Experimental del Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires in 2006. In 2007 Südwestrundfunk, Stuttgart commissioned a piece for solo cello, Ondulaciones del ahora, which received its premiere by Eva Böcker (Ensemble Modern).
The music of Marcelo Toledo owes its concentrated and exciting impact to the almost erotic intimacy of its unmediated sound production, expressed through the always precisely composed use of expanded instrumental and vocal techniques. In researching and composing, Toledo is intensively engaged with the instruments’ possibilities and, in addition, works closely with the performers. He also brings electroacoustic methods into play to further extend the deployment of sound.
During his stay as a guest of the Berlin Artists-in-Residence program, Marcelo Toledo plans to compose a new music theater work inspired by the diaries of the Polish author Witold Gombrowicz.
