Ultraschall Berlin 20th Edition – This year’s edition is cause for a moment of reflection: despite numerous transformations over the years, the festival has remained true to its original concept. From the very outset, the festival has continued to integrate newly created works into a music-historical context dating back to the beginnings of the post-war avant-garde. Within such a musically and historically reverberant space, aesthetic developments can be identified and generational evolutions and cyclical movements more easily understood.
In her work, Ashley Fure takes a similar approach in addressing the cello’s dual nature as both a sublime, aestheticized object and an amalgam of wood, hair, and glue. She depicts »the scars left on the manipulated instrument by the creative act.« The unmediated power and rawness of the sounds that characterize her work also demonstrate these qualities. The American composer creates musical dynamics by condensing and deconstructing complex sound relationships that often collapse. Movement, plasticity, and immersive moments also permeate her electronically augmented solo »Wire & Wool«, which she now presents in Berlin.
Fure, a current follow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, will present her work as part of a recital by Séverine Ballon. With virtuosity, the cellist has mastered steep challenges as well as the adventures of the performative, which are also on display visually and audibly in her performance of »inconnaissance« (2018). In addition, Timothy McCormack will perform »Drift Matter« (2013), Francesca Verunelli »Ultimi fiori« (2016–18), and Liza Lim her piece, »an ocean beyond earth« (2016).
