Calzadilla, Guillermo

Born 1974 in Philadelphia, Jennifer Allora studied at the University of Richmond and at MIT in Boston; Guillermo Calzadilla was born 1971 in Havana, Cuba and studied at Bard College, USA and at the Escuela des Artes Plásticas in Puerto Rico. The artist pair lives in New York and Puerto Rico.

For over five years, the two have worked on site-specific projects in public space, pursuing their aim of extending interpretation of the ideas of so-called “Land Art” through their “Land Mark” concept. Their actions are charged with political significance, as when, in their acclaimed video “Returning a Sound”, they dispatched a moped with a trumpet attached to its exhaust pipe to ride around a former U.S. military no-go zone on Vieques, Puerto Rico. Via artistic interventions, Allora and Calzadilla comment on political communication structures and bring them to public awareness.
