Born 1974 in Gothenburg (Sweden), lives in Bandhagen (Sweden).
Musical education (composition) at the School of Music in Piteå, the Royal College of Music, Stockholm, and the University of Gothenburg. Studies in Paris, Berlin and Tokyo with Gérard Grisey, Chaya Czernowin, Walter Zimmermann, Friedrich Goldmann and others. Since 2003, freelance composer and Composer-in-Residence with the Swedish ensemble Curious Chamber Players.

Numerous awards, including Swedish government artists’ grants and the Kranichsteiner Scholarship from the International Music Institute Darmstadt.
Ensemble Recherche performed her ensemble piece epic abrasion at the Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik in 2010. That same year, turbid motion for eight musicians was premiered at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, and a CD with a recording of the piece by Curious Chamber Players will be released in spring 2012.

Malin Bång’s oeuvre encompasses pieces for instrumental ensembles and orchestra, music theater, electronic music and instrumental performances. She describes her music as “an investigation of movement and energy”. She defines her musical material “according to its friction content” and shapes it into a broad “spectrum of unpredictable and contrasting actions” ranging from the “just barely audible to harsh/persistent”. She expands the instrumental palette in her scores with a variety of different sound objects.

During her Berlin residency, Malin Bång plans to work on several commissions, including works for the International Music Institute Darmstadt and the Donaueschinger Musiktage (for Ensemble Nikel); additionally she will collaborate with the Berlin musicians Sabine Vogel (flute) and Alex Novitz (voice). A new piece is planned with Ensemble Mosaik in which their instruments will be prepared with microphones and miniature loudspeakers.
