Inspired by the work of Maryanne Amacher, an Artists-in-Berlin Program music fellow in 1986, the sound and performance collective Dynamic Acoustic Research (DAF) explores what it means to them to be a fan of Maryanne Amacher. Dear Neighbors… invites the audience to listen to archive documents during a twenty-four-hour listening session with other fans that retraces Amacher’s network as an American musician in West Berlin.
…
First and foremost, we are fans.
We are fans of Maryanne Amacher.
Being a fan means sharing a fascination, showing interest, and mutual engagement. Being a fan can begin in a very casual way, sparked by a feeling, or emerge from years of deep involvement with Amacher’s practice.
For an entire day, we will gather fans—welcome new ones and invite long-time followers to exchange their thoughts. Together, we aim to reconstruct the relationship between Berlin’s institutions and the US artist. We will listen to archival materials, trace connections, and find rhythms. This involves holding on to and letting go of how something reaches the ear, using movement to pay attention to shifts in our acoustic environment, and exploring how the presence of others shapes our listening experience.
Over the course of twenty-four hours, interventions, discussions, and activations will converge into a choreography of listening, marked by circulation, exhaustion, and pauses.
DAF (Dynamic Acoustic Research) is a collective dedicated to performative and collaborative approaches to listening, exploring and creating sound. They search for contemporary and historical sound practices that exist beyond purely musical contexts. For DAF, sound is an unstable material that can be both sculptural and time-based.
With: DAF (Michael Akstaller, Theresa Hartmann, Rudyard Schmidt, Anouk Albrecht, and Silja Beck, Paul Wick), Luka Aron, Barbara Bloom, Bill Dietz, Agustín Genoud, Yara Mekawei, and others
