HERE HISTORY BEGAN pays homage and takes cue from the works of one of the most seminal and formative figures in the history of sound art and experimental music, Halim El-Dabh, who has dedicated his energies and life’s work to exploring the depths of sound and music across the African continent and the diaspora.
Next to Matana Roberts, invited artists are: Leo Asemota, Black Quantum Futurism (Camae Ayewa & Rasheedah Phillips), Vivian Caccuri, Jessica Ekomane, Theo Eshetu, Satch Hoyt, Kapwani Kiwanga, Tegene Kunbi, Yara Mekawei, Magdi Mostafa, Camille Norment, Emeka Ogboh, Lorenzo Sandoval and Sunette L.Viljoen. The exhibition is opening on the 24th of March 2020 in Berlin, followed by an invocation public program on the 19th of April 2020, and the project will continue to host a series of public programs, talks, concerts (inside and outside of SAVVY Contemporary) and radio features through 2020 and up until mid-2021.
Matana Roberts is a current guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme.
