Green Papaya (Fellows Visual Arts 2024) have developed an ongoing programme of events for the duration of their fellowship under the title Translokalität/Translocality, in which they invite existing and new partners in Berlin to participate. As part of the exhibition Jumpcut (5): Videoke Philippinen, the five artist initiatives and collectives Big Sky Mind, Furball, Tito and Tita, Lost Frames and Green Papaya are now showing an overview of Filipino moving image practices from 1999 to 2024. Through Filipino concepts of “bayanihan” and “tambay”, this exhibition examines the role that alternative spaces, networks, and key individuals have had in the development of experimental cinema, video art, multimedia installation, and new media.

Alternative art spaces and collaborations in the Philippines were a “means of survival” for artists interested in the radical and interdisciplinary. They would form independent spaces in which an alternative community could share resources, exhibit projects, and hang out [tambay]. This form of self-initiated community building relates to the precolonial term “bayanihan” that denotes communally banding together to survive in a hostile environment. Moreover, these initiatives fostered spaces for multimedia experimentation. Artists working across different disciplines like fine art, film, and music would “tambay” here, and it was in these unstructured and casual hangouts that ideas were exchanged and plans, such as Jumpcut, were made.

Established in 1999, the ongoing Jumpcut series has been part of Green Papaya’s programming since 2006 when it was the Philippines’ largest all-video exhibition. Curated by Filipino artist and cultural worker Rodolfo “Jun” Sabayton Jr. since its inception, Jumpcut has exhibited moving image works by film directors, cinematographers, animators, new media artists, sound designers, conceptual artists, and painters. It serves as an ongoing chronicle of the medium as it traces a lineage of experimentation and subversion in the Philippines.
