Ten years after the release of her first solo album ALL MACHINE, Kinga Tóth presents her second album of vocal poetry titled MARIAMACHINA.
Kinga Tóth is an artist and sound poet who combines her texts with objects, video, and sound installations in addition to performing them. With her versatile vocal technique, she creates a choir of corporeal sounds, texts in various languages, machine noises, and elements from folk songs.
In MARIAMACHINA, the posthuman cyborgs from ALL MACHINE are brought to life. They are joined by chants, songs, chorales, and murmurs, as well as new texts and formulations from recitatives, rhymes, and prayers—inspired by the art of nuns that Kinga Tóth is examining in her PhD project. Along with her research, the artist experiments with rites as well as exercises focusing on the body, speech, and soul, in addition to the concept of silentium in order to determine whether “the word” can actually be brought to life. She internalizes and transcends the boundaries of the texts and creates new prayers with the sounds of household objects, natural elements, and her own body.
MARIAMACHINA is released on Hinge Thunder, the tape label launched by Zsolt Sőrés (2021 fellow). It was mixed and mastered by Wouter Rentema. The texts from the album will be published by Matthes & Seitz in 2025.
