The 67th anniversary of the Hugan-an Hinilawod Recordings
Green Papaya celebrates the anniversary of the Hinilawod Recordings of Panay Bukidnon’s indigenous epic chanter Hugan-an by Filipino anthropologist F. Landa Jocano, recorded 67 years ago. On May 13, 2022, Shri Vishayas: Intersections of Indigenous, Rural and Contemporary Cultures, an initiative of Green Papaya funded by Outset Partners London, discovered the original site of the recordings during one of its fieldwork trips in the hinterlands of Tapaz, Capiz. The research team, headed by senior researcher Liby Limoso, also found the 92-year-old daughter of Hugan-an in a nearby village. These discoveries inspired the team to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the event by listening to excerpts of the old Hinilawod audio files, sharing testimonials, and hosting traditional performances at the site.
Green Papaya is celebrating this momentous event for the third time and with great joy as the Hinilawod Epic Chant Recordings have recently been inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World – Asia and the Pacific – Regional Register – during a Regional Committee Meeting in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on May 7-8, 2024.
The transcontinental program LISTEN / FROM TAPAZ TO BERLIN is first launched in the town of Tapaz, Capiz in the Philippines, on June 22 and culminates in Berlin on June 27 with Liby Limoso creating an intimate listening moment, and himself chanting an excerpt from the Hinilawod epic.
This event will highlight the significance of the UNESCO Memory of the World Committee for Asian and the Pacific (MOWCAP) inscription of this intangible heritage at the daadgalerie where the Hinilawod Recordings shall be heard for the first time in Germany.
Green Papaya are 2024 fellows of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.
Green Papaya is awarded a collective grant thanks to a cooperation with the Matschinksy-Denninghoff Foundation under the umbrella of Berlinische Galerie.
