With Vova Vorotniov

Nikolay Karabinovych (b. 1988, Odessa, Ukraine) works across various media such as video installation, performance, sound, and sculpture. He explores the social histories of Eastern Europe, approaching collective and personal memory by means of analytical, conceptual or interventionist tactics. In his recent works, Karabinovych consistently emphasizes the tension between presence and absence that many Ukrainians experience in exile.

Two films by Karabinovych will be shown as part of the accompanying public program to A Time in Pieces at the daadgalerie: The Story of the City where Two Colors Disappeared (2023) and a premiere of Ostannya Put (The Last Track) that was specially created for the A Time in Pieces project.

In this video, conceived for the 5th Kyiv Biennial, Karabinovych takes up the theme of presence and absence from another angle. Referring to the dwindling presence of Ukrainian solidarity flags on European institutional buildings, he documents urban scenes marked by wear-and-tear effect.

“If this film had ever been shown on television, it would have been announced as follows: ‘The year is 2028. The employees of a young creative agency in exile have been commissioned to create a musical about the history of Ukraine. But something went wrong.’ – resumes Karabinovych his fresh-made oeuvre.

The screenings will be accompanied by a talk with the artist, moderated by Serge Klymko.
