In sampling there is an irretrievable loss. Through the sampling component of digital recorders information is lost, in photography reality becomes even more fragmented. The works ‘Trains’ for violoncello and accompaniment and ‘The Grand Tour’, both from the last three years are now being presented in Berlin for the first time by the British composer and artist Joanna Bailie. Bailie employs musical and filmic means to create a new level of poetic perception from the relationship between reality and memory/sample which is so often characterized by loss. From her father’s travel photos, to the rhythm of a Strauss Waltz, to a waltz scene from Tom and Jerry, Bailie works from the realm of personal and collective memory in ‘The Grand Tour’; a realm which never lingers for long. Transpositions of recordings in ‘Trains’ lead the composer into ultrasound, creating an impression of how they might be heard by cats and dogs. Commentary to the performances will be provided by musicologist Lydia Rilling, alongside Joanna Bailie, whose doctoral dissertation reflected her own approach to composition.
