With Shireen Seno

Filmmaker and artist Shireen Seno (Film Fellow 2022) is an important voice in independent Filipino cinema. On January 31, Kino Arsenal will once again dedicate an evening to her work – this time with a focus on her curatorial practice.

Shireen Seno’s video essay To Pick a Flower (2021) explores the transformation and commodification of nature through archival photographs from the American colonial occupation of the Philippines in the first half of the 20th century. The difficult relationship between humans and nature is intertwined with the perspective of the colonial powers which permeates the archives and conventions of photography.

As a curator, Seno also makes excavations: The Kalampag Tracking Agency: 30 Years of Experimental Film & Video from the Philippines, a subjective rather than representative program co-curated with Merv Espina, brings together 13 short films made between 1985 and 2015 that reflect an alternative Filipino moving image practice and include works by Raya Martin, Roxlee, Miko Revereza, John Torres, Tito & Tita.
